Frequently Asked Questions
What paper stock should I select for my job?
There are so many stock choices available it can be overwhelming if you don't know which one to use - so here are Avlon Printing’s recommendations:
Business cards, postcards, door hangers, presentation folders, greeting cards, and rack cards: We suggest that you use a 14pt stock. While a lot of printers will use 12pt or even 10pt a 14pt will produce a much better result.
Brochures, flyers, bulletins and inserts: 80lb book (also called text) is the most common weight used but, if you really want to stand out from the crowd, we suggest you use 100lb book.
Letterhead: For letterhead we suggest a premium 24lb or a nice linen in full colour
Envelopes: We suggest either a premium 24lb smooth or a linen finish.
Posters: The stock you use for posters will depend on what they are for. For posters that are going to hang inside, not subjected to weather, won't have lots of light going through them or you're mailing them, we suggest 80lb book. 100 lb book should be used if light will be an issue or you're printing both sides. 80lb cover should be used if they are going to be mailed (but not folded), passed around a lot, or placed in high traffic or dirty areas.
Catalogues: The interior pages of a catalogue should be 100lb text and the cover can be a "self cover" of 100lb text or you can customize a job and do a thicker cover stock and even add UV coating. Depending on the nature of the project most catalogues are perfect using 100lb text and aqueous coated.
